New Guide
for Mayors
A toolkit empowering mayors to combat Islamophobia and anti-Arab hate through education, policy reform, and community engagement while fostering inclusion and equity.
We are pleased to announce that America Indivisible and the United States Conference of Mayors have collaborated to create "A Mayor’s Guide to Countering Islamophobia: Implementing the U.S. National Strategy to Counter Islamophobia and Anti-Arab Hate." This Guide serves as a vital resource for local leaders to address Islamophobia and anti-Arab hate in their communities. It outlines actionable steps for mayors based on the U.S. National Strategy to Counter Islamophobia and Anti-Arab Hate. It includes recommendations for educational initiatives, anti-discrimination policies, law enforcement training, and community engagement. The Mayor’s Guide promotes religious literacy, recognizes cultural heritage, and fosters inclusion. Following the recommendations in the Guide will better equip cities to combat bias, protect marginalized groups, and strengthen community resilience. We call on all mayors to take the actions outlined in the Mayor’s Guide.
This Guide is not just for mayors but also a call to action for communities. We hope that community members share this resource with their local leaders and encourage the adoption of its recommendations as part of their city’s policies and practices. Encouraging mayors and other local officials to adopt these recommendations ensures that the fight against Islamophobia and anti-Arab hate is prioritized and that meaningful steps are taken to create safer, more inclusive environments. Community members can organize town halls, advocate for policy changes, and work collaboratively with their local government to implement these initiatives effectively. Together, cities can lead the way in fostering understanding and unity while actively countering hate.
